- Limonene (a citrus-scented compound)
- Acetaldehyde, chloromethane, and 1,4-dioxane.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are molecules that evaporate into the air from products like air fresheners, releasing harmful toxins. VOC exposure is linked to various health concerns, including respiratory issues and environmental harm. Although Steinemann’s study did not specifically measure the health effects of these chemicals, earlier national surveys revealed that 20% of the population reported adverse reactions to air fresheners, and 10% experienced issues from vented laundry products. Among individuals with asthma, complaints were twice as common.
