Cockroaches 101

One of the worst things that can happen to any business is an infestation, specifically cockroaches. This pest has a well-known, negative reputation that could damage the standing of even the most renowned businesses. A population can thrive in any type of facility that provides them with food, water, and shelter, especially in locations where food preparation occurs. What to Know About Cockroaches

Cockroaches are nocturnal and only come at when it is dark. If someone notices one out in daylight, it means the population in the current settlement is so high that they need to find another area to inhabit. By then, there is already a serious infestation. It is also likely that individuals have felt their presence. Roaches are known to cause seasonal allergy-like and asthma symptoms in people. They are also known carriers of 33 different kinds of bacteria, such as Salmonella, Listeria, and Campylobacter, six types of parasitic worms, and seven other human pathogens. When people are exposed to their shed skins, urine, feces, saliva, and oothecae (egg casings) they may experience food poisoning, diarrhea, allergies, and skin rashes.

How They Get In

Cockroaches are devious insects and can find several ways to enter a building. They can hide in product or supply shipments, personal belongings, or packing supplies (such as pallets and boxes) and be unknowingly brought in by customers, employees, and other visitors. Roaches can also sneak in through drain and sewer pipes, floor drains, steam tunnels, and utility lines. Cockroaches are able to cover a considerable distance too as they can run up to three miles and hour.

Consequences of an Infestation

A cockroach infestation is considered a public health threat and grounds for temporarily or permanently closing a business until the pests are removed. The closure and extermination services are costly, and so is the damage to business’ reputations. Closures, especially of restaurants (which provide the perfect environment for roaches) are especially common. In one U.S. county, inspectors say they close at least one food establishment each week for pests.

How IPM Prevents Them

Integrated pest management (IPM) creates undesirable conditions in any type of building for pests by inspecting, monitoring, and taking action when necessary to prevent or treat infestations. This practice is a more cost effective approach that is also safer for the environment. For cockroaches, this means maintaining hygienic conditions and eliminating sources of food, water, entry, and shelter. Starting a preventative program now ensures that your business will no have greater problems later.
